Farewell to Fred: A Beloved Member of Our Sanctuary

It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news that Fred, our beloved sulfur-crested cockatoo, has passed away. For the past five years, Fred has been an integral part of our Sanctuary family, charming visitors with his chatty personality and warm demeanor. While we are devastated by his loss, we find solace in knowing we were able to give him a happy and healthy chapter in his life.

Fred’s Journey to Health

Fred came to us under challenging circumstances. His previous diet, which alarmingly included pizza and beer, had taken a toll on his health. When Fred first arrived, he was significantly overweight and in poor condition. Thanks to the dedication of our keeper team, Fred underwent a remarkable transformation. His diet was carefully adjusted to meet his nutritional needs, and over time, he managed to shed a third of his body weight. This achievement not only improved his physical health but also gave him a better quality of life—something every animal deserves.

Fred’s resilience and the efforts of our team were nothing short of inspiring. Watching him regain his vitality and thrive brought immense joy to everyone at the Sanctuary. He became a true testament to the power of care and commitment.

The Heart of the Sanctuary

Fred wasn’t just another resident; he was the heart of the Sanctuary. As the unofficial greeter, Fred made every guest feel welcome. His cheerful "hello" and lively chatter became iconic, turning ordinary visits into memorable experiences. Many of our visitors have fond stories of Fred’s antics, his playful personality, and the way he seemed to genuinely enjoy connecting with people. He had an incredible knack for brightening everyone’s day.

Saying Goodbye

On Friday afternoon, Fred began showing signs of illness. Our team acted swiftly, ensuring he received immediate medical attention. Despite everyone’s best efforts, Fred passed away the following morning. A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of his sudden passing.

The Sanctuary feels quieter without Fred’s vibrant presence. His absence is deeply felt by our team, who loved and cared for him, and by the many visitors whose lives he touched. Fred’s life reminds us of the importance of giving animals the care and respect they deserve, and his memory will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

Have a look at our announcement on social media for all the comments from visitors and members sharing their condolences.

Remembering Fred

Fred’s legacy lives on through the countless smiles he brought to our guests and the invaluable lessons he taught us about compassion and resilience. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate the joy he brought into the world and the chance we had to provide him with a loving home.

Rest in peace, Fred. You brought so much light and laughter to the Sanctuary, and you will be profoundly missed. 💛
