Welcome, Mr. Sprinkles! Our Newest Feathered Friend

Almost a month ago, we had the joy of welcoming Mr. Sprinkles, a juvenile emu, to Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary! His journey to us was an unusual one—this young emu was found running near the freeway, likely an escaped pet, as he was very comfortable around humans and had no idea how to be a wild emu. Luckily, the incredible Wildlife Twins jumped into action, providing him with a safe space and expert care while we prepared his permanent home.

A Special Rescue & The Journey to the Sanctuary

Once we received approval to provide long-term care for Mr. Sprinkles, it was time for him to make the journey to his new home. And how did he arrive? In a horse float! 🚛 After arriving, he spent a week in our onsite quarantine paddock, allowing him to adjust to his new environment and meet our keepers in a quiet, comfortable space. Once he was given the all-clear by the veterinary team, it was time for his big move!

Settling into His New Home

Mr. Sprinkles was released into our walk-through hinterland rainforest enclosure, where he joined Melbourne, our older male emu, and our mob of Eastern Grey Kangaroos. He was so excited to be among other wildlife, quickly exploring his spacious new home. One of his biggest thrills? The natural creek that runs through the enclosure—turns out, Sprinkles loves water! Ever seen an emu try to swim? It’s as entertaining as you’d imagine!

A New Friendship with Melbourne

While Melbourne remains the boss of the enclosure, he seems to enjoy the company of his new feathered friend. Watching these two interact has been heartwarming, and we can’t wait to see their bond grow even stronger.

Come Meet Mr. Sprinkles!

Our keepers are absolutely delighted to have Mr. Sprinkles as part of the Sanctuary, and we know you’ll love him too! Next time you visit, be sure to stop by and say hello to this curious, water-loving, and ever-so-charming emu.
