Home School Program:

Amazing Adaptations

The Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary’s Term 3 " Amazing Adaptations " Home-school Program offers an immersive learning experience about the concept of evolution and adaptation in Australia’s wildlife. Over seven weeks, students will dive into specific themes, starting with an introduction to evolution and its importance for species survival. They will explore the ancient supercontinent Gondwana and Australian megafauna through interactive games and activities. The program then focuses on famous theorists like Charles Darwin, with hands-on activities such as bone digs and fossil creation. Students examine plant adaptations, using microscopes to observe plant species and understand their impact on ecosystems. They will delve into the evolution of reptiles, from dinosaurs to modern species, including studies of reptilian skin adaptations. The program investigates mammalian evolution, particularly marsupials, with observations of the sanctuary’s mammals. Students also study the evolution of birds, examining feather adaptations and environmental influences on beak shapes and diets. The program concludes with discussions on human evolution and future adaptation, culminating in students presenting their projects and participating in a graduation ceremony. All sessions are conducted by experienced wildlife ambassadors, emphasizing the conservation of Australian wildlife, landscapes, and indigenous knowledge. This hands-on program is designed to inspire and educate kids about the importance of adaptation and evolution in the natural world and ways we can consciously evolve to move towards a more sustainable, wildlife-friendly future!

7 week program

Time: Fridays from 10 am

Age: 5-12 years old

Limit: 10 per class

Includes

Students will be delivered content in immersive session designed to teach students at different educational stages within the same class.
Learning activities will vary depending on students' age and capabilities.

  • WEEK 1 - EVOLUTION & SURVIVAL
In the first week of the program, students are introduced to the idea of Evolution and why animals and plants have needed to adapt and change over time. We look at why evolution is important to a species survival, and touch on our Ancient Planet (Gondwana Land) as well as exploring Australian Megafauna. Through games and actives, students observe evolution over time and begin work on their terms project.

  • WEEK 2 - FAMOUS FACES IN FLORA & FAUNA
In week 2, we touch on famous evolution theorists such as Charles Darwin, and begin to learn how we can witness evolution and adaptation through time. By microscope observation and fossil comparison, students get a real-world glimpse into observing and creating historical evidence of evolution.

  • WEEK 3 – FANTASTIC FLORA - PLANT ADAPTATIONS & THEIR IMPACT ON WILDLIFE
Plant week we look into different ways that plants have evolved over time and how they are integral to wildlife and our environment. Students will observe different plant species under the microscope and compare with their environment to understand how and why they have evolved to modern day plants. Through games and activities, students will also look at how plant evolution impacts animals and humans throughout time.

  • WEEK 4 – TERRIFIC TRIASSICS AND REPTILE RELICS
In reptilian week, students explore Ancient Reptiles and their habitats. Through discussion and games, students will observe how Reptiles have evolved throughout time, learning the close relationship between Reptiles and Dinosaurs, and how they ruled the earth during the early Triassic period

  • WEEK 5 - MAMMALIAN MAGIC
During our Mammalian week, students will explore Mammalian evolution through a range of different activities and observations of the wildlife at the Sanctuary. Students will take a deep dive into resident mammals and their physical adaptations, as well as discover why so many of our Australian Mammals are marsupials.

  • WEEK 6 – WINGED WONDERS AND THE EVOLUTION OF THE AVES
The evolution of Aves (Birds) throughout time and how they have evolved from dinosaurs will be the focus of the session. Using the microscope, students compare differences in feathers and discuss how they might help each species to survive. Through games and activities, students touch on The Charles Darwin theory of Natural selection and explore how environment and habitat determine different beak shapes and diets.

  • WEEK 7 – HUMAN EVOLUTION AND A WILDLIFE FRIENDLY FUTURE
In our final week- Students explore how humans have evolved over the last several hundred years. Through discussion students will learn some positive ways we can consciously evolve to move towards a more sustainable, wildlife friendly future!
