In December 2014, the previous owners took the first step to becoming energy independent with the installation of a 180 panel 45KW solar system. Not only does this system power the site’s daytime electricity needs, it also provides complete power to Matilda, the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital’s mobile clinic while based here at the Sanctuary.
The Sanctuary is using 100% of the electricity it generates and so does not have any battery storage.
The venue was the first large car park solar installation on the Far North Coast. When built, it was the only free solar powered charge station in Australia.
